Mediation

A mediator is a neutral party who facilitates negotiations between people. This may include mediation of a full divorce, selected aspects of a separation, or mediation of post-decree disagreements in order to avoid litigation. One advantage of mediation is that the negotiating parties maintain control of the outcomes and agreements that they enter into, and thus can customize solutions to fit the specific needs of their family.

Often parents who are divorcing find it helpful to use a psychologist as a mediator to assist them in developing a Parenting Plan. This allows parents to benefit from the psychologist's experience and expertise with conflict resolution and child development. The psychologist is a neutral in this situation and does not advocate for either party or make any decisions for the parents.

Mediation is confidential, so parties can be free to make proposals about potential resolutions without concern that those proposals will become part of a litigation process.
